Ally Zlatar

Ally Zlatar
MLitt Curatorial Practice // Glasgow School of Art ’19

Ally is a Canadian artist, curator and activist currently based in Brisbane.

“Exploring art making as a methodology that suggests the human condition is more complex than it is currently understood, I examine, instigate and provoke notions of the individual experience through specifically focusing on philosophical discourse, body image, embodiment and ethics.

I acknowledge there is power within the unwell body and believe there is tremendous value and potency through examining these subjects through the contemporary art lens. I am continuously interpreting; my desire to communicate and facilitate the theoretical concepts of art is highly valuable to me and my practice and I strive to make a difference in society”.

As an artist, Ally’s work has been exhibited across the UK – including Edinburgh College of Art’s Wee Red Bar – as well as in Canada, in addition to several online exhibitions organised by galleries based in Chile, China, Hungary, Italy and Spain. Her past curatorial projects include roles with organisations in Birmingham, Glasgow. London and Ontario.

Throughout her studies, she was awarded a number of grants and scholarships, such as Glasgow School of Art’s Student Initiated Projects Fund, Art Access Scholarship and Art Sustainability in Action Fund (2019). More recently, she received the Visual Arts Scotland Artist Workers Fund Micro Grant (2020).

Ally is also an accomplished writer and public speaker, having contributed to numerous publications and conferences. Her most intensive project to date is titled The Starving Artist: Understanding the Value of Eating Disorders, Body Image and Thinness in Art. This project culminated in the publication of a non-profit book dedicated to providing educational resources and starting conversations around eating disorders; featuring the work of 25 international artists exploring themes concerning visual identities associated with eating disorders. The book has been acquired by over 30 universities worldwide, and has also raised over £2000 for The Starving Artist Fund, which helps individuals access inpatient treatment.
