Claire Kidd

Claire Kidd
MLitt Painting // Glasgow School of Art ’20

Claire is an artist and maker from Aberdeen “though in the era of the digital place this has lost its meaning”. She specialises in painting, but also works across ceramics, performance, sculpture and drawing.

“My work focuses on themes charged by nervous energy, such as a concern for the encroaching of a surveillance state or the potential dangers to come, should our rate of technological advancement continue. My surreal depictions of these topics rely on the liveliness I experience in the world around me. Through heated conversations, crowded transport and loud workspaces I am intrigued by chaos. In the studio I work to replicate this erratic tempo, using bright colours and aiming to find balance in busy compositions”.

Her practice currently revolves around the confusion of place and physicality, as well displaying the disorientation of time that was felt during the isolation of lockdown. These paintings attempt to make the digital through the physical, the physical digitally translatable and the confusion of experience felt. They are cut up fragments of experiences that occurred before lockdown, travel and community, disrupted and displaced as we all have been.

In the past, Claire has exhibited her work in Aberdeen, Edinburgh and London. More recently, she has participated in online exhibitions and and curated her own virtual display for her website. She has experience of working collaboratively within her local community, as well as 7 years experience within her solo practice. During her undergraduate studies at Gray’s School of Art, she co-ran alternative life drawing classes, won the Carnegie Vacation Scholarship (2018) to travel to Barcelona, Bilbao an Marrakesh, and was also commissioned to create a large-scale mural located in Eric Hendrie park in Mastrick, Aberdeen.
