Courtney Barr
BA (Hons) Contemporary Art Practice // Gray’s School of Art ’20

Courtney is based in Aberdeen.

“Recently graduated into the ever-changing world, my practice evolves with me. I’m concerned with how we interact in this digital era and take time to process the present.

Using bodies within space, I am inspired by the immediate surroundings of remote landscapes in Scotland – concentrating on human experience and how emotions can be evoked through referencing the land. Using drawing, photography, ceramics and video, I explore the land, creating personal soundscapes to accompany these works.

Travelling out and beyond my home is key to making my work. Seeing new areas and interesting sites leads to new creations. My work looks at the transportive elements of creating and how we can be reminded of other times. I combine traditional drawing and contemporary installation to create a vast range of works, depending on the time and place.

Interacting with the work is an important part of my practice. I want the audience to feel something either directly or indirectly through tactility and layers. These interactions are becoming more and more vital in this digital era where we live in the world of Instagram rather than real life.

By creating immersive installations and drawing the eye around through colour and texture, I want you to feel to feel more than the mundane everyday that everyone feels throughout their busy lives. And when life returns to normal and people can come back to galleries, I want to continue to break the barriers of these spaces and invite people in to make them their own”.

As a student, Courtney participated in several exhibitions and residencies in Aberdeen and Glasgow, and co-founded the Hard Plastic collective – born out of a shared passion for creativity and collaboration. Adapting to current circumstances, Courtney continues to exhibit their work online.
