Elinor O’Donovan
BA (Hons) Intermedia // Edinburgh College of Art ’19
Elinor is a digital media artist, born in Ireland, and currently based in Edinburgh. Her work is characterised by colourful digital collages and paintings.
“My art practice deals with aspects of internet culture such as memes, viral video, and the aesthetics of stock images. I play with the realities that are constructed by the internet. The images I remix are inspired by Google Image Search results, where some images are privileged by being the top search results on Google.
To give an example; a stock photo of an egg that I download is just one variation of what an egg may look like, but it is given authority in saying ‘this is what an egg is’ by being a top search result on Google. In this way, I think the internet can shape reality and what we know of the world”.
Elinor has participated in several exhibitions in Edinburgh, including at the Embassy gallery, Edinburgh Palette and Forest Arts space. She also undertook an online residency with the latter earlier this year, and has another residency lined up at the Sample Studios in Cork in October.
