Elizabeth Ann Day

Elizabeth Ann Day
BA (Hons) Fine Art // DJCAD ’18

Elizabeth is a contemporary artist from Fife, currently based in Dundee. Within her practice she aims to understand and analyse fads of the 1990s and 2000s. In the past this interest has led to works about pop star memorabilia, collectible plates and more recently sticker albums (such as those produced by PANINI). This develops into large scale installations and publications which scrutinise the amount of time and money we spend in an attempt to reach completion.

Many of the trends investigated in Elizabeth’s work relate to her own upbringing, watching shopping channels and reading Shout magazine in suburban West Fife. The connection of the area to brutalism, Bauhaus and ultimately New Towns has a growing link to her practice as she connects an interest in ‘instant collectibles’ to an insular community.

“My practice has been primarily led by intense research into collecting, and its relationship therefore to mass production and consumerism. With this supportive theoretical base, I have been able to construct a body of artwork investigating the fad known as instant collectibles. The companies commanding this market label their products as ‘collectible’. Yet they are not unique, they are not precious, and they are certainly not worth what the consumer pays for them. It is this deception that inspires my work as I duplicate this imagery. In doing so, I hope to toe the line between commercialisation and fine art, ultimately educating the viewer about the misleading nature of corporations in the ‘collectible’ market”.

This image is taken from the front cover of a 12 page zine constructed in July 2019 with imagery found in W.I.T.C.H. magazine, published in the UK until January 2009. The zine can be viewed for free from the artist’s website. Physical versions are available for £4 each (the original magazines price in the UK, adjusted for inflation) and come with a free gift of PANINI stickers from the 2009 W.I.T.C.H. sticker album of the same name.

Throughout her studies and beyond graduation, Elizabeth has immersed herself in numerous projects – including co-founding Flat181 Art Space, the DJCAD Zine Library and Volk Gallery, to name just a few. In addition to her role as a curator for the latter, she is also currently an editor for windfall* and both a freelance designer and Young Peoples Collective member for the V&A in Dundee. She has exhibited her work in a number of galleries throughout Scotland, as well as England and Finland. Earlier this year she was awarded both the Young Scot Nurturing Talent – Time to Shine Fund, and the Visual Arts and Craft Makers Award’s Emerging Artist Bursary.
