Galina is a visual artist and curator, working across painting and performance art. Originally from Bulgaria, she moved to the UK to study for her second Master’s Degree, having previously gained an MA in Stage Design from the Bulgarian National Academy of Arts.

Utilising diverse experience in dance, theatre and fashion, Galina combines drawing, painting and technical skills to create visual projects which explore set and costume design, movement, time and space.

Her work is heavily influenced by the psychology of Carl Jung – specifically, theories of the dichotomy between rationality and instinct within the psyche.

“A central approach in both my painting and performance practice is the interplay of presence and absence, weaved with a surrealist element, where fiction blends with reality to reveal the implicit self. The figures in my paintings exist between the visible and the invisible; the real and the surreal. I use a combination of translucent brushstrokes and vivid lines, evolving from a deliberately ‘colder’ and faint colour scheme, into intense colour and detail. The visual language is more laconic, creating a sense of intrigue and mystery.

My work is saturated with the presence of women. They simultaneously conquer the space and disappear into it – summoned to a fluid pilgrimage, where desire prevails in movement and stillness erupts in tension. Through exploring movement, confinement, endurance and tension, I use the body – the medium of all perception – to observe the disrupted boundaries between suppressed passions, virtues and restraints within the mind”.

While living in Bulgaria, Galina founded the Glena Art Studio, where she organised various events and exhibitions. Since moving to London, she has immersed herself in the local art scene, taking part in a number of solo and collaborative projects – including participating in and curating exhibitions, leading workshops and delivering presentations.
