Jasmine Mills

Jasmine Mills
BA (Hons) Fine Art // Falmouth University ’17

Jasmine lives and works in Cornwall. Her approach to painting is emotional and instinctive; she feels an urgency to make marks and respond to people and places in the context of a historical narrative. A fascination with rural landscapes, old settlements and past human stories lived informs her work.

The imagery in her painting draws parallels and connects with the lived experience of contemporary and historical societies. Jasmine has a fascination with the moment by moment conversations and experiences that connect us and transcend time, particularly our emotional and spiritual existence and its connection with place.

“My paintings explore relationships between figure and land. I use abstractions to create dysfunctions within the imagery with the aim of creating a connection between viewer and place or figure and place.

When I begin painting I have an idea of a place or destination. Whether I am working from photo or memory I tend to allow happy mistakes to evolve my paintings and I believe its very important to work from instinct. I’m most excited by elements of surprise and it’s these moments that can open doors to new painterly discoveries”.

Jasmine has participated in several exhibitions across the South-West of England, and has also co-curated an exhibition of emerging artists with a group of fellow graduates. Her recent achievements include winning the Cultivator Cornwall Mentor Bursary (2018) and Cultivator Graduate Start Up Bursary Award (2017).
