MA Fine Art // Chelsea College of Arts, UAL ’19
Marion was born in Toronto, where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Drawing and Painting at the Ontario College of Art and Design (OCAD) University; studying abroad for one term at Central Saint Martins in London. She is now living and working in London, having graduated from the University of the Arts London with a Master’s Degree in Fine Art last year.
She also attended Summer School programmes at the Slade School of Art and the Drawing Room with Joy Gerrard, respectively.
“At its best, art provides a platform for discussing important issues in our contemporary world. It disrupts the routines of day-to-day existence and fulfils our need for connection and community.
Through the transformation of materials into artworks, I have chosen to explore the fragile relationship and disconnection between humans and nature. Most recently, I’ve been exploring the changing surface of the earth due to climate change, and reduction of biodiversity caused by human destruction of habitats.
My time in the studio offers me the chance to unplug from an often overwhelming world, and enter a state of making that is quite different than the demands of thinking and writing.
For my paintings, I begin by creating monoprints using acrylic paint, then build up layers on top of these transferred images using hand-painting. I view this active surface manipulation as a collaboration between the artist and the materials. This process creates a tonality which references black and white aerial photography or anatomical text book illustrations or topographical maps. My sculptures are composed of synthetic black rubber combined with metal stands or brackets.
Through these works, I hope to encourage viewers to consider their own actions while interacting with plants, animals, the earth, and other humans”.
Marion has previously exhibited her work in Canada, The UK, Poland and France. She was recently shortlisted for the 2020 Clifford Chance Sculpture Award. Her other achievements include her role as a visiting lecturer at Chelsea College of Arts and a residency at Atelier Melusine in La Trimouille.
