Nicola Donaldson

Nicola Donaldson
BA (Hons) Fine Art // DJCAD ’18

Nicola is a Fine Art graduate based in Dundee, specialising in sculpture, wood and metal work.

“Creating textured blocks which represent chipped paint or constructing metal-copper pipes which surround our spaces. Materials are central to my practice and I combine the industrial and domestic aspects of the spaces. These combinations bear a presence as the structures take on a life of their own and replicate the dominance that buildings present in a city.

Fixated on the material culture which embodies our surroundings, my work is heavily informed by the structures that can be found ubiquitously. My research is a range of photographs, sketches and digital collage, I use these to construct objects that have hints of colour, form and texture.

These objects have no boundaries, they work with the space they are set in and can change position depending on the location. Becoming a modern day relic due to the influence of my research, as the objects are connected to the past historical context of my recorded investigation. I immerse myself in alchemic experimentation and each object takes on a new life as I trial a range of materials until the finished outcome has a felicitous feature. I am collating an archive of sights and aspire to connect with peoples consciousness of presence”.

Nicola is a member of the Pepsi Collective, and has exhibited with them in Edinburgh and Dundee. As a student, she was one of fourteen artists selected for the Scotland + Venice Professional Development Programme (2017). She is an aspiring museum professional, having gained experience in several arts organisations including the Edinburgh Art Festival, Cooper and McManus galleries.
