MA Fine Art // Edinburgh College of Art ’19
Rosalind is an artist and art facilitator based in Edinburgh. Her practice often takes the form of colourful and expressionistic paintings and prints.
Her work is strongly inspired by her environment and experiences and she enjoys experimenting with combinations of printmaking, painting and collage. Rosalind’s interest in using art to create a positive impact on people has led her to freelance work with arts learning, community arts and art in healthcare initiatives, including Edinburgh Art Society, Jupiter Artland, Linlithgow Museum, Whale Arts Agency, Art in Healthcare Charity and Articulate Cultural Trust. Beyond art she is hugely influenced by music, which she has been able to incorporate into creative workshops and collaborations.
This piece is taken from Rosalind’s Landscape, Natural Rhythms and Elements series. “Ideas of landscape, universal elements and natural rhythms of waves, rain and wind informed this work. Although abstract, compositions diagram natural phenomena and fragments of landscape. I enjoyed exploring printmaking, and combining its ordered and technical processes with more intuitive elements of paint, collage and colour. I worked spontaneously, responding to and adjusting marks as work progressed, and used a range of mediums to produce dynamic, layered pieces which hold within them a sense of rhythm and flow”.
More recently, she has begun to explore ideas of landscape in context of the Covid-19 pandemic.
“During the pandemic my themes have taken on a new resonance whilst my subject matter changed. The paintings produced explore my environment whilst in lockdown, primarily taking inspiration from nature. At the time of making, it is not clear what life will look like as we emerge from lockdown, caught between before and life after the virus”.
Rosalind has exhibited her work in a number of Edinburgh venues, including the Embassy gallery, St Margaret’s House, Space Club and several of ECA’s exhibition spaces, as well as in France. She has also organised and co-curated group exhibitions. Following her degree show, Rosalind was selected as a Saatchi Art Rising Star, shortlisted for the Astaire Art Prize and was also commissioned to paint a mural for a café (2019). In addition, she has works in a number of collections, including that of NHS Lothian.
