Shae Myles
BA (Hons) Contemporary Art Practice // Gray’s School of Art ’20

Shae is a contemporary artist indulging in the delicious, gooey pleasures of food and sex. Her practice sets out to highlight the parallels between these two pleasures.

Shae’s research stems from a fascination with psychosexual analysis, as well as the hybrid narratives present on the internet, which take place in the forms of fetish and food porn. Ideas of excess, mess and ritual are embedded in her visuals, which typically take the form of video, photography, installation, performance and illustration.

“As a society, we tend to overindulge. We fixate and become frustrated, allowing our most basic, animalistic elements to take over. These primarily include hunger and sex. Eating is deeply embedded within our personalities, and can often subconsciously be emotionally intertwined within our sexual relationship with ourselves and others.

Our cravings for pleasure can be highlighted by my Undressing Pleasure series; when the food substance is removed from the image, what is left is a blatantly sexually-charged image. The characters featured pose naked with the food either adorned on their body or displayed playfully. The basis of these images is to question the paradox of our sex-driven society, which still maintains such taboo understandings of sex.

Food and sex act as irresistible lenses through which to explore one another, as there is a sense of care, passion and consumption at the forefront of both. My practice considers the ways in which these concealed similarities exist, bringing to the forefront the reality of our most secret, mouth-watering pleasures”.

Shae is a co-founder of both the HARD PLASTIC and Jiggle n Juice Collectives. She has participated in exhibitions in Aberdeen and Shetland. Her work was recent selected out of over 1000 submissions to feature on a billboard in London as part of the Nationwide Degree Show. She was also recently nominated for the BP Fine Art Award, and won both the Design and Code Virtual Space and RGU Art and Heritage Purchase awards (2020).
