Tania Costa

Tania Costa
BFA Drawing & Painting // OCAD University ’20

Tania is a Portuguese-Canadian artist based in Toronto. Working primarily with painting and drawing, she is focused on creating work that questions her relationship with her religion and cultural heritage, and how those ideologies have shaped her sense of self and belonging.

“My work records moments of shame and guilt driven by traditional Catholic and patriarchal thought processes, capturing the female figures in moments of vulnerability and solitude. The use of selective negative and positive space bounds the figures to space with no time or direction, giving a sense of hopelessness and confinement to the work”.

Tania created the Untitled portrait as part of her final thesis during the first week of quarantine.

“With a slight emphasis on pattern repetition and minimal colour use, this image depicts the weight of tradition, identity, and emotion on the female form. In many ways, this work also represents my emotional state during these unprecedented times.”

Tania was active in Toronto’s art scene throughout her studies, participating in exhibitions throughout the city and becoming a member of the Partial Gallery. In this year alone, she has won the Propeller Art Gallery’s Emerging Artist, Nora E. Vaughan and John Madott Fine Art awards.
