BA (Hons) Fine Art // University of Gloucestershire ’20
Weronika was born in Poland and now lives in Cheltenham.
“My practice entails the ideology of social standards of beauty. I am drawn to people with an ‘unusual’ appearance that society would deem as ugly, hideous or unattractive. I explore the correlation between imperfections and perfections, features that define someone as beautiful but are different from others, enhancing and celebrating their unusual characteristics.
I strictly use raw canvas, as it holds qualities I see within a person’s true self. The painting’s layers upon an organic base translates to that of a person’s appearance and personality, uncovering the truth about their portrayal. The verso of the painting being one of those layers, unveils the hidden, private self.
Each surface built up within my paintings remain apparent despite all the other layers. I explore the relationship between each of these layers, experimenting with level of interfusion between them; surface, pattern, portraiture and translucency and develop an essence of balance. There are also relations between the linear and the realistic, the flat and the sculptural, the basic and the detailed, the translucent and the camouflaged that I try to uncover”.
Weronika has exhibited her work in Poland and England. She has also worked in France, having won her university’s Travel Award to undertake a research project in Paris (2019). Her other recent achievements include receiving honourable mentions in the Jagiellonian University Art (2017) and FAM (2016) prizes.
